The Aftermath of Sandy

Hurricane Sandy has come and gone from the region.  In its wake lots of damage and destruction and mass transit was not spared.  Locally SEPTA was shut down from 12:30 AM Monday until about 12:00 Noon Tuesady with Regional Rail coming back Wednesday morning.  SEPTA managed to escape Sandy largely unscathed with most of the damage being from downed trees.  New Jersey Transit was not so lucky.  Their rail operations center at the Meadows Maintenance Complex (MMC) was submerged and caused damage to the train control computers and the back up systems.  Also damaged were 65 locomotives and 257 rail cars.  NJT resumed bus service in Camden County on Wednesday with the River Line coming back in the afternoon running a Sunday schedule and not running south of Walter Rand TC.  More bus routes state wide resumed operation today with no timetable on the return of rail service.

UPDATE: Limited rail service has resumed on the NEC Line bewteen Trenton and New York.  All other lines remain suspended.

UPDATE 11/04: Full service restored on the Atlantic City Rail Line along with partial service on the Raritan Valley Line and North Jersey Coast Line.

SEPTA does its first interior wrap on a Silverliner

Silverliner V #702 will be the first Silverliner ever to receive an INTERIOR ad wrap.  SEPTA posted pictures of the “Speakeasy Silverliner” on its Facebook Page, which will advertise the American Spirits exhibit at the National Constitution Center.

SEPTA will display 702 on Thursday, October 25th at Suburban Station, from 7 AM to 6 PM.  The actual exhibit at the Constitution Center will run until April 28th, 2013.

Amtrak now has e-ticketing available!

Finally, Amtrak implemented an e-ticketing system that can be used on all trains nationwide!  Customers can either print out their tickets at home, or use their mobile device to pull up the ticket to be scanned by the conductor.  This is SUPER convenient for those of us who, er, tend to cut it close when picking up the ticket for their train.

Just remember that this isn’t available yet for multi-ride or group tickets.

SEPTA expands Ardmore Avenue Station for the 2013 US Open

SEPTA is expanding the Ardmore Avenue Station on the Norristown High Speed Line in preparation for the crowds that may use the line to attend the 2013 US Open at the Merion Golf Club.  This station will accomodate 2 car trains and have improved lighting and shelter facilities.  Construction has already started and is expected in end in the spring.

There are talks about erecting a temporary pedestrian bridge to the golf club, but nothing has been finalized yet.

Weird collision between 2 N5s last night

The cars of a 2 car train on the Norristown High Speed Line detached while in service and then slammed into each other (recoupling in the process).  This occured between Beechwood-Brookline and Pennfield Stations at around 7:45 PM.  Seven people were injured and the line was replaced with shuttle buses between 69th Street and Bryn Mawr Stations until about 10 PM.

The Budds and Louies Have Collected Their Last Fares

Amdist a large railfan turnout last night the final two older Sivlerliners (Budd 9010 and St. Louis Car 235) ran their last runs.  They operated on the last Cynwyd run of the day – 1091 – and then deadheaded back to town as D6092 with many of the railfans still on board returning to Center City.  The train made a special run to Market East for a final photoshoot before returning to 30th Street and then the deadline at Powelton Yard.  Here is a picture of 235 at Cynwyd preparing to leave on D6092 after completing its last ever revenue run.  Photo by Joe Butler.
